Welcome to Lope Country

The Office of Welcome Programs serves incoming, new students and families through an orientation and transition process that builds connection to campus life. Navigate through the tabs below for more information on New Student Orientation, Welcome Week and resources available for new students and families.

The 2019-20 Resource Guide contains essential information including what to bring to campus, how to get involved, where to find academic support and so much more. New students will receive a hard copy of the Resource Guide at summer New Student Orientation or in the Welcome Packet that will be mailed to them in August.

New Student Orientation

Why Express Move-In?

  • Express Move-In is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so you are strongly encouraged to make any travel arrangements necessary to arrive during this time. GCU does offer self move-in 2 – 4 pm on each building’s move-in day only for students who are absolutely unable to arrive during Express Move-In. If self move-in causes you to miss your mandatory New Student Orientation, plan to attend make-up NSO on Saturday, Aug. 24. Please be advised that there are no early move-in times.

How to Pack for Express Move-In

  • Put everything in a sealed box or bag. Label it with your first and last name and room number in LARGE print. Use a marker to make the writing stand out.
  • We recommend you pack valuable items (laptop, medication, jewelry, etc.) in a separate box and ask the Welcome Crew volunteers to let you carry it up to your room.
  • Pack any items you don’t want to go to your room (parents’ luggage, car emergency kits, etc.) in a separate location from move-in items. You may also label these items with “do not take” or “leave in car.”

Your Move-In Voucher

  • A move-in voucher will be sent to your GCU email in early August. Print your voucher and place it in the windshield of your car. The voucher should ONLY be in the vehicle the student is in.
  • If multiple students are in one vehicle, every student should have their voucher readily available.
  • We may ask to scan your student ID when you check in for Express Move-In, so have it readily available.

Check Before You Leave

  • Double check your move-in date and time. We do not allow early move-ins. You will be turned away if you show up too soon.
  • Inspect your car and A/C before leaving for GCU.

Waiting in Line

  • You will arrive on campus by exiting off of Camelback Road from I-17. GCU is only a few blocks from the highway, so the line may stretch down Camelback.
  • Expect to wait in a line of cars (wait times can range from 30 – 120 minutes) but the experience is worth it!
  • Tune into Welcome Week Radio on 100.7 HD2 or the TuneIn Radio app to hear live updates of wait times.
  • Eat a meal, use the restroom and be sure to have a full tank of gas before you hop in line. Portable restrooms will be available along your route, but wait times can vary.
  • As long as you are in line by the end of your building’s move-in shift, you will receive Express Move-In.
  • Avoid overheating your vehicle by running your A/C intermittently while waiting in the traffic line on campus.
  • When you check in for Express Move-In, we will write on your vehicle’s window(s) with a chalk marker.
  • It is recommended that you avoid arriving to campus via cab or rideshare because you may be charged for time spent waiting in line. If it is necessary for you to travel this way, be on the lookout for specific drop-off locations when arriving to campus.

Count on the Crew

  • Look forward to the Welcome Crew surrounding your vehicle when you pull up to your building and cheering for you! It only takes a few minutes for the crew to move all of your belongings up to your room.
  • Ask the crew to let you keep your valuables with you and carry them to your room.
  • A vehicle left unattended for any length of time can cause significant delays to the move-in process. For this reason, we require that the driver of your vehicle stay inside and park in designated areas, even if the student is the person driving. Don’t worry, you will be able to return to the room after parking.

Stick Around After Move-In

  • We limit access to campus during Express Move-In. It may be hard to get back onto campus if you leave.
  • The Lope Shop carries all the room essentials you’ll need to start off your semester. We also host Bed Bath & Beyond on campus to help you furnish your new space.

Your Welcome Week required events will start in the afternoon. We recommend sending a family member shopping or waiting until later in the week to leave campus.
